How the bifold wallet is built

An outer shell and an inner shell, each one piece across the fold. The outer shell is cut 3 mm longer: that is what it takes to reach round the inner shell when the wallet closes.

A stack of three stepped card pockets sits on each half and stops 4 mm short of the fold, so the pockets never bend with it. Each stack is stitched down its outer side and along the bottom through every layer. Its side toward the fold goes through the pockets and what lies right under them only, so that row does not show outside, and the fold itself stays free of stitching.

Bills go in at the top, between the two shells, the whole length of the wallet. Under each pocket stack lies a full-height panel, stitched along its top, one side and the bottom: a pocket behind the cards that opens toward the fold.

Print it at full size

Three pages on A4 or US Letter, every part whole on its page. Print at 100 % (“actual size”), not “fit to page”. The first page has a 50 mm square: measure it before you cut anything. If it is off, see how to print leather patterns to scale at home.

The stitch holes are spaced 3.38 mm. For hole counts along any seam at that spacing, see the 3.38 mm stitch spacing chart.

Common questions

What size is the finished bifold wallet?

110 × 90 mm closed (4.33 × 3.54 in), and 220 × 90 mm lying open. The corners are rounded 5 mm. Every one of these is a number you can change in the Builder.

How many cards does it hold?

It has six card slots, each taking a standard 85.6 × 54 mm card lying across. In the Builder you can add or remove pockets on each side, and its 3D view puts a card in every slot so you see how far each one shows.

What leather thickness is the pattern for?

It is drawn for 1.2 mm and 0.8 mm leather: the thicker for the outer shell, the thinner for the inner shell and the pockets. The outer shell's extra length at a fold is worked out from those, so set your own thickness in the Builder before you print.

What stitch spacing does it use?

3.38 mm between holes, 682 holes in all, set for a diamond chisel. The holes of every piece land on the holes of the piece under it. In the Builder you can pick another chisel, French slit or round, and another spacing.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

It is free and needs no account. The PDF downloads from this page, and the Builder keeps what you change in your browser. A free account keeps your designs on every device you sign in on.
