How the trifold wallet is built

Three panels and two folds. The left panel closes first, onto the middle one, and is cut 2 mm narrower so its edge sits inside the right panel's fold. The right panel closes last, over it.

Every layer is 4.5 mm longer at the right fold, the thickness of the left panel, so that fold can stand over it. The outer shell is 3 mm longer again at each fold, to reach round the inner shell.

Each panel carries two card pockets that stop 4 mm short of the folds beside them. The panels are too narrow for a card to lie across, so the cards stand on their short side. The middle panel's pockets start lower than the outer ones'.

The bottom is stitched under all three panels through every layer, both folds stay free, and bills go in at the top, between the two shells. Under each pocket stack lies a full-height panel, stitched along its top, one side and the bottom: a pocket behind the cards that opens toward the fold.

Print it at full size

Five pages on A4 or US Letter, every part whole on its page. Print at 100 % (“actual size”), not “fit to page”. The first page has a 50 mm square: measure it before you cut anything. If it is off, see how to print leather patterns to scale at home.

The stitch holes are spaced 3.38 mm. For hole counts along any seam at that spacing, see the 3.38 mm stitch spacing chart.

Common questions

What size is the finished trifold wallet?

71.5 × 115 mm closed (2.81 × 4.53 in), and 217 × 115 mm lying open. The corners are rounded 5 mm. Every one of these is a number you can change in the Builder.

How many cards does it hold?

It has six card slots, each taking a standard 85.6 × 54 mm card standing on its short side. In the Builder you can add or remove pockets on each side, and its 3D view puts a card in every slot so you see how far each one shows.

What leather thickness is the pattern for?

It is drawn for 1.2 mm and 0.8 mm leather: the thicker for the outer shell, the thinner for the inner shell and the pockets. The outer shell's extra length at a fold is worked out from those, so set your own thickness in the Builder before you print.

What stitch spacing does it use?

3.38 mm between holes, 825 holes in all, set for a diamond chisel. The holes of every piece land on the holes of the piece under it. In the Builder you can pick another chisel, French slit or round, and another spacing.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

It is free and needs no account. The PDF downloads from this page, and the Builder keeps what you change in your browser. A free account keeps your designs on every device you sign in on.
